Learning a new language can be challenging, but with the right resources and motivation, it’s definitely possible! My name is Mohammed Shukri, and in this blog, I’ll share my personal journey and tips on how I’ve learned Dutch. I’ll also highlight the tools that have made a big difference, such as social media and apps, in improving my language skills.

1.Finding the Right Resources

When I first arrived in the Netherlands, I found it hard to find good resources for learning Dutch. It’s especially tough when you’re new to a country. My journey had a lot of ups and downs, but each effort brought me closer to my goal.

Now, after two years of dedicated practice, I’m thrilled to say that my Dutch has improved significantly. I even passed my Dutch language state exam last week! Thanks to language classes, apps, social media, Netflix, podcasts, and daily practice, my Dutch has made impressive progress.

2.How Using Social Media Has Improved My Dutch

Social media has proven to be an excellent tool for learning Dutch. It not only enhanced my language skills but also connected me with Dutch speakers and authentic Dutch content. For example:

  • Follow Dutch Influencers and Content Creators:
Following Dutch YouTubers and Instagrammers who post in Dutch, like street interviews and music videos, has made it easier for me to better understand the language, slang, and Dutch culture.
  • Reading Dutch News and Articles:
Keeping up with Dutch news broadcasts and blogs on Twitter or LinkedIn has improved my reading skills and vocabulary. The youth version of NOS news, the Jeugdjournaal, is also a good resource because it often uses more accessible language and covers various topics.
  • Watching Dutch Content on TikTok:
    Watching short videos from Dutch
content creators on TikTok, such as funny sketches or language tips, has helped me learn Dutch slang, improve my pronunciation, and understand the culture in a comedic way.
  • Following TikTok Live Shows and Engaging in the Chat:
Watching Dutch live shows on TikTok and participating in the chat has really helped me get a better feel for the language and culture. Engaging with comments has also been a great way to practice and learn more.
3.Netflix plays a dynamic role in developing Dutch language skills

Yes, Netflix really helps. If you’re wondering how: Netflix has lots of Dutch films and series that have improved my listening, helped me learn new words, and taught me how to pronounce things correctly, all in a relaxed setting.

Here’s how I use Netflix to learn: When I watch a film and see a new word or phrase, I pause to write it down, often with the help of subtitles. If I don’t get something right away, I replay it until I understand it. This method works well, but it takes time and patience.

4.Apps You Should Always Have on Your Phone

Learning a language isn’t just about listening and reading; speaking is crucial too! Apps like Tandem and HelloTalk allow you to chat or video call with native speakers, providing a great way to practice speaking and build confidence in the language. These apps have been incredibly helpful during my language lessons. Additionally, other apps, such as De Het and Werkwoorden Nederlands, are very useful for improving your Dutch grammar.

5.Podcasts have significantly enhanced my language skills

At the beginning of my Dutch language journey, I listened to DutchPod101 almost every day. Through this podcast, I picked up new words and phrases for everyday use, and the grammar was explained clearly. This podcast offers many useful lessons and exercises for every level and has been highly educational.

6.Keep your motivation high and be patient

Achieving success in language learning requires regular practice, regardless of how many mistakes you make. Persistence is key. Also, don’t be afraid to engage with others. Dutch people are generally friendly and supportive. I frequently say, ‘My Dutch isn’t perfect yet. Could you please speak more slowly?’ This approach has helped me build friendships and even meet my girlfriend.

By leveraging these resources and applying these tips, you’ll make significant progress in learning Dutch. Whatever method you choose, remember that consistent practice, enjoying the learning process, and being patient are essential.
